Newry

The canal that opened the town

Ireland's first summit-level canal, and the trade that built the town.

Background

The Newry Canal opened in 1742, linking the town with Lough Neagh. It is widely recognised as the first summit-level canal built in Ireland or Britain, predating the better-known English canals of the industrial era.

Coal from Tyrone, linen and farm produce moved along it, and Newry grew into one of the busiest ports in Ulster. Today the towpath is a walking and cycling route.
